Nature-based solutions for disaster preparedness

Updated: Oct 21

With floods and fires being on everyone's mind we collaborated with Landcare NSW to develop a series of training packs and videos that explore nature-based resilience building, leveraging the power of nature to reduce disaster risks and help communities adapt to an ever-changing environment.

What Are Nature-Based Solutions? 🌱

New South Wales is home to some stunning landscapes—from lush bushlands to sprawling farmlands. But, like many places, it's also vulnerable to natural disasters. Bushfires, floods, and severe weather events have become all too common, putting our communities, wildlife and ecosystems at risk.

That’s where nature-based solutions come in. These are strategies that focus on protecting, managing, and restoring natural ecosystems to help us better prepare for and manage disasters. Healthy ecosystems, such as wetlands, forests, and grasslands, can absorb floodwaters, reduce soil erosion, and act as natural firebreaks. By working with nature, we can not only reduce disaster risks but also create healthier, more resilient environments for people, wildlife, and the land itself.

A Collaborative Effort for Stronger Communities

One of the great things about this project is that it’s all about community-led solutions. Through the People Led Prevention Project, Landcare NSW is empowering local communities—farmers, landholders, and others—to take action in building resilience and reducing disaster risks.

This project equips people with the tools and knowledge to implement nature-based solutions that suit their specific needs, whether it’s protecting a farm from floods or restoring local habitats. What makes it truly special is how tailored and hands-on it is. Landcare NSW works directly with communities, ensuring the solutions are practical and impactful, based on the unique challenges of each area.

By involving locals at every step, the People Led Prevention Project creates a sense of shared responsibility, fostering stronger, more resilient communities while restoring vital ecosystems.

Training Packs and Videos: Making Nature-Based Solutions Accessible 🎥

To help spread the word about these powerful strategies, we worked with Landcare NSW to develop training packs and videos. These materials are designed to be simple, step-by-step guides that anyone can follow to start using nature-based solutions in their own community.

Whether you’re a farmer looking to prevent flood damage or a community leader wanting to make your area more resilient to bushfires, these resources can help you take real, meaningful action.

The videos also showcase real-life examples of nature-based solutions in action, highlighting how communities in New South Wales are already making a difference by restoring ecosystems and building resilience against disasters.

Why This Work Matters Now More Than Ever 🌏

With climate change making natural disasters more frequent and severe, it’s never been more important to find sustainable ways to adapt. Nature-based solutions are a win-win. Not only do they help reduce the risks of disasters like bushfires and floods, but they also provide long-term environmental benefits—like sequestering carbon, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity.

By investing in nature-based solutions, we’re not just protecting our communities now; we’re also setting them up for a more sustainable, resilient future.

Get Involved: Access the Resources Today

If you're interested in learning more about nature-based solutions and how you can start using them in your own community, you can now access all the videos and training packs through the NSW Landcare Natural Disaster Resource Hub. This hub is a one-stop resource for anyone who wants to build resilience through nature-based solutions—whether you're managing a farm, restoring a habitat, or just looking for ways to make a positive impact in your community.
