New South Wales: 2024
Water is life. In New South Wales, it's a lifeline for communities and the environment. Water for the environment has helped to restore, maintain and improve river and wetland sites across New South Wales over the past 20 years, revitalising ecosystems and nurturing vital natural assets. These efforts have sparked significant positive change across the state. To hear the stories of those making a difference, listen to the River Champions podcast.
Gulpa Creek Wetlands: A Hidden Gem of Nature and Culture
Nestled in the heart of the Millewa Forest, the Gulpa Creek wetlands are more than just a natural wonder—they are important for the region's biodiversity and a living archive of Aboriginal cultural heritage. Supported by the NSW Water for the Environment program, these wetlands play a pivotal role in sustaining the delicate balance of life. Paul Childs, Senior Environmental Water Management Officer, puts it best: "These river systems, floodplains, and wetlands should be held in the same esteem as the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo."
A Sanctuary for Rare and Endangered Species
The wetlands are a sanctuary for a diverse array of flora and fauna, including some of Australia’s most threatened species. The Australasian bittern, a rare and secretive bird, finds refuge in the pristine reed beds of Gulpa Creek. Dr. Liz Znidersic, a leading researcher, estimates that around 1,300 Australasian bitterns call the Gulpa wetland area home. The survival of these birds is a powerful testament to the importance of preserving these wetlands.
Cultural Significance
But the significance of Gulpa Creek goes beyond its ecological importance—it is deeply entwined with the cultural heritage of the local Aboriginal communities. The creation story of the Murray River, passed down through generations, reflects the spiritual connection between the land and its people. Kevin Atkinson, a Bangarang man, captures the essence of this bond: "When you get out on Country, it's just like you're recharging your batteries. And instead of listening to all the city noise, you can hear all the different birds."
